What is a Rhinoplasty or Nose Reshaping?
Understanding Your Nose's Anatomy
Before we delve into the techniques of rhinoplasty, it’s important to understand the nose’s primary structures. It consists of an upper bony part and a lower cartilaginous part. The septum, a thin wall of cartilage and bone, divides the nasal cavity into two nostrils. Changes can be made to the bone, cartilage, skin, or all three, depending on the desired outcome.

Reshaping the Nose
Depending on the desired result, the following adjustments might be made:
- Dorsal Hump Reduction: For those with a prominent bump on the bridge of their nose, the surgeon may shave down the bone and cartilage to create a smoother profile.
- Tip Refinement: The cartilage at the tip of the nose can be sculpted, reduced, or occasionally augmented with cartilage grafts to achieve the desired shape and definition. The tip of the nose may be rotated higher or lower to create a more aesthetic nasal profile.
- Narrowing the Nostrils: Wide or flared nostrils can be adjusted by removing small amounts of tissue.
- Straightening the Nose: If a nose appears crooked or off-center, modifications can be made to the bone and cartilage to bring about a straighter alignment.
Rhinoplasty Frequently Asked Questions
Can rhinoplasty change my voice?
Is age a factor for undergoing rhinoplasty?
How often is a revision rhinoplasty required?
Can I combine rhinoplasty with other facial surgeries?
Many patients combine rhinoplasty with other procedures like chin augmentation, facelift, or eyelid surgery for a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Your surgeon can advise on the best combination based on your goals and anatomy.
Does rhinoplasty affect my sense of smell?
What can I expect in my recovery?
Typically, there is bruising that lasts 10-14 days. You may have a splint on the dorsum of your nose that stays in place for 10-14 days. There may also be splints inside your nose (depending on the techniques used by your surgeon) that often remain for 7-10 days. The vast majority of your swelling resolves in the first 4-6 weeks. Afterward, there is a slow resolution of the small amount of remaining swelling for the next few months.
