Breast Lift

The silhouette of the breasts often plays a significant role in one’s body image and self-confidence. Over time, however, factors such as aging, gravity, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and significant weight fluctuations can impact the shape and position of the breasts, leading them to sag or lose their youthful perkiness. A breast lift, medically termed Mastopexy, addresses these concerns by reshaping and elevating the breasts to a more aesthetically pleasing position, restoring their firmer and uplifted contour.

At Renaissance Plastic Surgery, our surgeons are breast surgery specialists with extensive experience in all types of breast construction. A breast lift is not a simple procedure, so the skill of your surgeon is paramount. The areolas and nipples must be repositioned, and an excellent outcome means that you retain as much sensation as possible while achieving the look you want.

Breast Ptosis: The Underlying Issue Addressed by Mastopexy

Spacer - Gray

Breast ptosis, or sagging, is a natural occurrence that many women experience at some point in their lives. This condition is classified based on the position of the nipple relative to the inframammary fold, the point where the underside of the breast attaches to the chest wall. There are generally three degrees of breast ptosis:

  1.  Mild Ptosis: The nipple is at the level of the inframammary fold.
  2.  Moderate Ptosis: The nipple is below the inframammary fold but still above the lowest part of the breast.
  3.  Advanced Ptosis: The nipple is well below the fold and points downward.
Mastopexy (Breast Lift) specifically addresses breast ptosis, offering a solution that not only elevates the nipple and areola but also reshapes the breast to achieve a firmer, more youthful appearance.

Prior to your surgery, we will consult with you to determine how you would like your breasts to look after your procedure. Using our VECTRA 3-Dimensional Imaging System, we can illustrate different forms of Mastopexy and different types and sizes of implants. Renaissance is the only plastic surgery practice in the area with this new technology.

The Difference Between a Breast Lift and Breast Augmentation

Spacer - White

Breast Lift:  This procedure focuses on reshaping and elevating the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the tissue. The primary goal is to lift sagging breasts and improve their overall shape.

Breast Augmentation:  This procedure involves using implants or fat transfer to increase breast size. It can also restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy.

Combining the Two:  Combining a lift with augmentation can provide comprehensive results for those looking to both lift and increase the size of their breasts. It’s a tailored approach, ensuring that the breasts are not only lifted but also voluminous and shapely.

What happens during a breast lift?

A breast lift is an outpatient procedure that is performed under general anesthesia. Depending on the case, the surgery can take as little as one and a half hours or as long as three hours. During the surgery, excess skin is removed, and the tissue is reshaped in a higher position. This also involves moving the nipple and areola. If the areola has been stretched, it may be reduced in size so that it is rounder in shape and more proportionate with the rest of the breast. While the nipples and areolas are moved, they remain attached to the blood vessels in order to preserve sensation.

What can you expect after a breast lift?

Most women take a week or two off from work after a breast lift. Bandages will be applied, and we will probably ask that you wear a surgical bra during the healing period. As after most surgeries, you can expect some tenderness, inflammation, and bruising. Soreness and bruises should subside within days, but the swelling may linger for a few weeks, after which you will be able to see your final result.  All sutures are under the skin and will not require removal. Drains are rarely needed.

You will need to sleep on your back and avoid lifting and strenuous exercise for a period of time.

While breast lift surgery is long-lasting, gravity can cause the breasts to sag further over time. For most women, subsequent sagging is considerably less than they experienced prior to the surgery.

Other Frequently Asked Questions: Breast Lift

Yes, scarring is inevitable after a breast lift, but our surgeons are skilled at keeping scars to a minimum. The scars also diminish over time.

A variety of methods are used for breast lifts depending on your anatomy and the distance your nipples need to be lifted. In most cases, three incisions are made – horizontally in the natural under-curve crease of the breast, vertically from the bottom of the areola to the crease, and around the areola.

This is a very nuanced conversation that your surgeon can guide you through. In general, if you want to increase your breast size and your nipples are above the inframammary fold (the fold beneath you breast), breast augmentation is the route for you.
If you do not want to increase your breast size, but your nipples are below this fold, and you are seeking restoration of your breast shape and aesthetics, a mastopexy is often the right choice.
If you both want to increase your breast size and need to lift your nipples, then an augmentation and Mastopexy is the solution. In some cases, the Mastopexy may need to be performed first, with the implant placed in a future procedure, in order to give the most aesthetic, reliable results.

If you are dissatisfied with the appearance of sagging breasts, a breast lift may be the answer for you. If you are planning to become pregnant in the near future, however, it is best to wait before having a breast lift.
