Understanding Ear Surgery

Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) is a specialized procedure that not all plastic surgeons perform because it requires significant experience and training. At Renaissance Plastic Surgery, we have performed numerous otoplasty surgeries to reshape the ears and correct ear structure.

Why Consider Otoplasty?

  • Enhanced Facial Symmetry: The ears play a crucial role in the overall balance of facial features. Correcting any disproportion or asymmetry can provide a more harmonious appearance.
  • Boosted Self-esteem: Many individuals, especially children, face teasing or self-consciousness due to prominent or misshapen ears. Otoplasty can offer both physical and emotional relief.
  • Correction of Birth Defects: Some individuals are born with ear deformities. Otoplasty can address these issues, leading to improved aesthetics and function.
  • Recovery from Trauma: Accidents can sometimes lead to torn earlobes or other ear injuries. Ear surgery can restore the ear’s natural appearance.

What happens during an ear surgery/otoplasty procedure?

After a thorough examination, we will determine the best surgical plan for you and will let you know what you can expect from your procedure. Your surgery will involve whatever is required to reshape your ears to a more symmetrical, proportionate, natural, and pleasing appearance.

Ear surgery can be performed under sedation or general anesthetic. Depending on the extent of your surgery, you may be required to spend a night in the hospital, or you might be allowed to go home the same day with instructions for after-care. Most often, this procedure is conducted on an outpatient basis.

Are there visible scars after ear surgery?

All ear surgeries are highly individualized, but incisions can usually be placed in areas where the scars will not be visible after surgery, such as behind the ears or within the ear folds. We will discuss your case with you in detail and advise if you can expect any noticeable scars following your procedure.

What can you expect after ear surgery?

Your ears will be bandaged, so any activities that involve your ears, such as the wearing of earphones, must be avoided until some healing has taken place. We will provide you with a pain medication prescription to manage any post-surgical discomfort, which may continue for 1-2 weeks. For these reasons, parents will try to schedule this procedure around summer break or school holidays.

You can return to normal daily activities, except strenuous exercise, when you feel ready, although you may decide to take a week or two off from work, as there will be some post-surgery inflammation and bruising.

While results from ear surgery are immediate, the swelling may prevent you from seeing the final outcome until the inflammation has subsided.
If stitches are to be removed, we will do so during one of your follow-up appointments.

Common FAQs About Otoplasty

Children can undergo otoplasty once their ears have reached near-full size. Performing the surgery at a younger age can be advantageous as the cartilage is more pliable, allowing for easier shaping. Moreover, early intervention can prevent potential teasing and self-consciousness during school years. Many otoplasties are performed around age 6-8.

No, otoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that focuses on the external appearance of the ear. It doesn't involve the inner ear, which is responsible for hearing. Any temporary hearing changes post-surgery could be due to swelling or the presence of bandages, but this is temporary.

The results from otoplasty are generally permanent. However, just like any other part of the body, the ears can be affected by natural aging processes, potential trauma, or other rare external factors. Regular follow-ups with your surgeon can ensure the results remain satisfactory over time.
