Understanding a Facelift Surgery

A facelift, known by plastic surgeons as a rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to renew the face, addressing sagging skin, deep wrinkles, and other signs of aging. A facelift is a meticulously designed procedure to lift and tighten sagging skin on the face and neck. It doesn’t just tackle the skin’s surface; it delves deeper, addressing the underlying structures such as the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS), which often loosens with age. By doing so, facelifts provide comprehensive, longer-lasting results that can’t be achieved with non-surgical alternatives.

When done expertly, a facelift can take years off your appearance in a way that looks completely natural. At Renaissance Plastic Surgery, our surgeons have performed numerous successful facelift surgeries – each customized to the individual for a more youthful look that is not tight or drawn.

What can a facelift correct?

Spacer - Gray

A facelift can:

  • Tighten lax skin on the face
  • Lift sagging skin and muscle in the neck, cheek, and chin areas
  • Smooth lines, wrinkles, and folds such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines
  • Tighten the jawline and reduce jowls
  • Correct hollowing of the cheeks
  • Remove or lessen bands in the neck

A facelift concentrates on the face below the eyes. If you have lines and wrinkles around the eyes or on the forehead, an eyelid lift or a brow lift might be helpful. These procedures are often performed in conjunction with a facelift.

Facelift Techniques

The art and science of facelifts have evolved substantially over the decades, embracing advancements in medical knowledge, technology, and shifting aesthetic preferences. Below, you will find the 3 most common types of “facelift” techniques in the market today.

  • “Traditional” Facelift:  The traditional facelift is the gold standard when it comes to comprehensive facial rejuvenation.
    • Approach: It’s an all-encompassing procedure, targeting the face’s multiple layers, both the skin and the deeper underlying investing fascia and muscles. The work on these deeper structures is what gives the facelift long-lasting results. The primary incisions are concealed within the hairline, extending around the ears and occasionally under the chin.
    • Benefits: This method offers the most dramatic and lasting results, addressing deep-set wrinkles, pronounced sagging, and other advanced signs of aging.
    • Considerations: While results are profound, recovery can be more extended compared to less invasive techniques.
  • “Mini” Facelift:  As the name suggests, the mini facelift is a more focused and less invasive alternative to its traditional counterpart.
    • Approach: Targeting specific areas, such as the neck or the lower face, uses smaller incisions, making the procedure quicker.
    • Benefits: With a reduced recovery period and minimized scarring, it’s ideal for those showing early signs of aging or individuals seeking touch-ups after a previous facelift.
    • Considerations: The results might not be as long-lasting or comprehensive as a full facelift.
  • “Liquid” Facelift:  The liquid facelift represents the intersection of surgical precision and non-surgical intervention.
    • Approach: Leveraging the power of injectables, like dermal fillers (e.g., Juvederm) and neuromodulators (e.g., Botox), this non-surgical facelift aims to lift, plump, and smooth the facial features.
    • Benefits: Minimal to no downtime, immediate results, and the ability to address specific problem areas make this a popular choice for many. It’s also reversible, offering a level of flexibility.
    • Considerations: Regular maintenance is necessary as the effects of injectables wear off over time.

The Importance of Personalized Care

With an array of facelift techniques at one’s disposal, the key lies in personalization. Renaissance Plastic Surgery’s board-certified surgeons prioritize in-depth consultations, ensuring each patient receives the technique that aligns with their unique facial structure, aging patterns, and aesthetic goals. Your surgeon may recommend additional procedures such as brow lifts, eyelid lifts, laser treatments, or fat grafting to give an overall harmonious result.

What can you expect after a facelift?

Most patients take 1-2 weeks off from work after a facelift.  If you have had a full facelift, you will almost certainly require the full 2 weeks to recover.  Bruising, swelling, and some post-surgical pain are inevitable.  We will provide you with a prescription for pain medication, and you will visit us for follow-up appointments so that we can make sure you are healing properly.

Your head will be bandaged, and we will ask you to sleep with your head elevated for a few days to minimize swelling.  You should refrain from exercise for at least 2 weeks after your surgery.

Are there visible scars after a facelift?

There are a variety of facelift techniques, but the incisions are usually hidden along the contours of the ear or under the hair.
